UPDATES and NEWS
Sales Tax Reallocation Proposal – PLEASE vote YES!
In any civil service department, you rely on tax money to fund the purchase of equipment, the hiring of personnel, the maintenance and building of facilities and even the training of personnel. As the cost of living increases, so does the cost of operating a fire department. For example, you’ve probably felt the affects of the sharp rise in fuel costs. We have too. In fact, we have already made serious and significant cost cutting measures to counter-act this rise in fuel costs. However, you can only cut so much before impacting the quality of service. In addition to cutting costs we are in need of an increase in the sales tax we receive from the local merchants. We can do this by proposing an increase in the portion of tax they, the merchants, pay to the fire department. We are not proposing a direct increase in taxes that will impact you, the citizen, but rather the merchants in our area. Nobody, including the merchants, likes to see an increase in taxes, however, it is the single method by which civil service agencies obtain funds to operate. By voting “Yes” to the upcoming tax proposal, your fire department will be able to sustain then improve operations and service provided to you, the community.
BBQ Lunch - A huge success! Thank you everyone!
New Station 61 Proposal for Montgomery Creek Ranch
We knew this day would come, the day we out grew our old station. The current Station 61 on SH 242 East is a well known community gathering place. We host voting, local group meetings and even the popular Chili Supper in the Winter. This building was built for a volunteer fire department where people gathered in mass only once in a while and didn’t “live” there. Needham has grown with the surrounding area and is now providing a “Duty Crew” made up of 4-7 professional Firefighter/EMTs who “live” in the station while on-duty. These firefighters are in addition to the existing volunteer organization that operates from the same station. The infrastructure is constantly breaking and being overwhelmed due to the added stress of firefighters using it 24x7. Needham has proposed and is in the process of obtaining a piece of property in the new sub-division just east of the current station 61, Montgomery Creek Ranch. The property is in the front of the sub-division and will have a modern and attractive fire house built on it to continue to serve the residents and merchants of the Needham area. We are very excited about this change and hope you are too. If you have any questions, please contact us at Station 61, 936-321-0999.
